Our building season is short and our ground moves. A deck built on shallow footings will lift, twist, and pull away from the house within a couple of winters - it is the single most common failure we get called out to look at.

We set footings below the local frost line and design for real snow load, which is what separates a pergola that lasts twenty years from one that sags after the first heavy March dump. Structures attached to the house get properly flashed ledger connections, not lag bolts through siding.
